UW-Richland aims to promote greener power and sustainable energy. As part of those efforts, the UW-Richland Campus Foundation Smart Farm has a solar photovoltaic system consisting of 24 crystalline silicon modules connected in a series to produce direct current which travels to an inverter. A SMA Sunny Boy 6000 (watt) US inverter converts the DC power to usable AC current. This AC power then feeds into the main distribution panel at the farmhouse and takes the power to where it is needed (appliances, lights, geothermal pump, etc.). Any excess power is pushed back onto the Richland Electric Utility grid and credited at the retail rate.
