Director of Library Services

University of Wisconsin-Richland (Richland Center, WI)

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Director of Library Services is responsible for the management of the campus library and reports directly to the Campus Executive Officer/Dean. The position is an academic staff, twelve-month appointment. The Director develops, promotes, maintains and evaluates library services to faculty, staff, a varied student population, and the community. The Director supports the curriculum through active collaboration with faculty and staff, works actively with the Instructional Technology (IT) staff to enrich the library's operations, and is proficient in library computer technology. The Director is responsible for training and supervising support staff and student employees.

QUALIFICATIONS: An ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science and a minimum of two years professional experience are required. Experience in an academic setting is preferred.

ADMINISTRATION OF THE LIBRARY:

  1. Within the framework of the campus mission and governance bodies, and in consultation with the Campus Dean, set library policies, goals, and objectives.
  2. Administer all aspects of library services for the campus.
  3. Maintain the library as a user-friendly, multi-media learning center. Actively consult with faculty, students, and staff in utilizing library resources and developing programs to serve their educational needs.
  4. Maintain professional knowledge of library and information science. Communicate new developments and potential opportunities to the Campus Dean and campus community. Also be aware of developments in information technology and instructional media and their relationship to the library as a teaching and learning resource.
  5. Participate in a variety of campus, UW Colleges, regional and statewide Committees and represent campus issues, ideas, and concerns as appropriate. Serve on UW Colleges Library Council. Actively participate in campus and university-wide planning activities.
  6. Oversee library lending, collection maintenance, service agreements, and all other services.
  7. In consultation with the Office of Student Services, Administrative Services Office, and appropriate governance committees, periodically review policies regarding lending, overdue charges, fees, etc.
  8. Work closely with the Campus Information and Instructional Technology Committee and, the Colleges Information and Instructional Technology Committee, Library Support services, and appropriate bodies and individuals to coordinate library operations and plans.
  9. Work with the campus IT Staff to update and expand library services.
  10. Actively participate in Engaging Students in the First Year (ESFY) activities.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT:

  1. With the advice and active, regular input of faculty and staff, select books, periodicals, audiovisual materials and other information resources to support the campus mission and curriculum.
  2. Maintain up-to-date holdings, records, and files necessary for access and inventory of library holdings. Collect, evaluate and report data, regarding the library's collections, in a timely and accurate manner.

TEXTBOOK RENTAL PROGRAM: Supervise and monitor the work of the library Financial Specialist whose duties include but are not limited to ensuring that textbooks required to support the campus curriculum via the campus textbook rental system are available to students as needed; effectively providing students and faculty access to the textbooks necessary for course work; and managing the budget in the capital, supplies and expense, and salary areas of the Textbook Library Program.

PUBLIC SERVICE:

  1. Maintain a strong customer service image for the library. Develop the library as a "one stop resource" for information services, which may be delivered on site or electronically.
  2. Provide reference and information services, including interlibrary loan, to meet the needs of campus clients and the public.
  3. Provide instruction and assistance to students, faculty, staff and the public in the use of various information resources. Prepare and disseminate library-related aids for users; make classroom presentations as requested by instructors; stay current with curricular and pedagogical trends/developments, and keep campus informed of new information resources and services.
  4. Continuously collect, evaluate, and report data regarding public services, and adapt services to serve changing needs.

SUPERVISION:

  1. Supervise all library staff, including support staff and student employees. Provide training for library staff, including support staff.
  2. Maintain all required personnel records and manage all personnel matters related to the library.

BUDGET:

  1. Plan the library budget in consultation with the Campus Dean, appropriate campus committees.
  2. Order materials, equipment, and supplies following UW-System, campus, and Library Council procedures and within budgetary allocations.
  3. In consultation with the Dean, seek funding and alternative resources to enhance the Library's ability to provide adequate collections, access to information resources, and service to its clients.
  4. Administer budgets within state and campus guidelines and allocated amounts. Maintain all library account balances, including personnel, supplies and equipment, and capital.

Professional/Community Activities

  1. Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations and activities, as appropriate.
  2. Establish goodwill and working relationships with a variety of external groups and organizations for the benefit of the campus.
